Metal Detector Finds: What'S Out There?

Metal detecting is a hobby that some people love and others consider to be a waste of time. Those that are fans of the hobby cite their own metal detector finds as proof that metal detecting can be a hobby that results in finding new objects, while detractors sometimes use their own bad luck with metal detector finds to try to show that the hobby isn't worth your time. If you're still sitting on the fence, then here's a picture of some of the ways you can enjoy your metal detecting hobby and get some metal detector finds under your belt:

    Coin Shooting

Perhaps one of the most commonly recognized ways that people enjoy metal detecting is coin shooting, which is simply a term for hunting for coins hidden in the ground. There are different kinds of coin shooting, however. One common method of this is to search around fields where sporting events take place sometime shortly after a match, which can sometimes result in change from people's pockets.

The other sort of coin shooting also involves searching out areas where many people used to be, but involves looking for coins of historical significance. These coin shooters tend to do historical research in order to get an idea of new sites where they can make metal detector finds. Any old dwelling is fair game for them, and these people can sometimes find coins that are well over 100 years old

    Relic Hunting

Similar to coin shooters who look for historic coins, relic hunters also have to do a lot of historical research. Rather than look for coins, these people will scour records for locations of battles, military camps from the civil war, residential dwellings, and so on in an attempt to find historical artifacts. Sometimes these people are looking to find things like Civil War relics to sell; other times, they're interested in the history of an area for its own sake, and their metal detector finds merely help to fuel that interest.

    Beach Combing

Another stereotypical metal detecting hobby, beach combing goes along beaches with the goal of getting metal detector finds like coins or lost jewelry. Serious beach combers understand how the tides work and know the best times to look for lost items. The great thing about beach combing is that even if you don't find anything of note, you've still got to enjoy some time at the beach! So whether your goal is to get some spare change, to find items of historical significance, or to ferret out hidden treasures at the beach, how you enjoy your metal detecting hobby, as well as what metal detector finds you go after, are up to you.
